Toyota iQ 1.0 VVT-i
The best thing about the iQ is that it has – and remember that I’m saying this about a Toyota – a tremendous sense of personality. From a car maker whose range is generally worthy but about as exciting as bleeding to death in a warm bath, you can’t help but think they’ve gone and done it. A bit of Mini cheek matched with the modernity and rationality of a Smart – except better than both. Best of all, it’s bang on timing-wise, well-sorted and brilliantly conceived. And it makes all the rest look compromised, out-of-date and dull. It’s also reassuringly expensive. Remind you of the iPod yet?

Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML320: Function
In our real-world usability tests, a rear-facing child safety seat fit fine in the ML320's accommodating rear compartment, though taller front passengers may have to slide their seats forward a little. Golf clubs are a different story. We expect a midsize SUV to have plenty of club storage space, but the ML doesn't provide enough horizontal room for even a compact carry bag. Depending on the length of your driver, you might have trouble fitting your bag lengthwise as well, leaving you with two options — go diagonal, or fold down one of the rear seatbacks.

Pontiac Vibe GT FunctionThe car's high beltline brings compromises when it comes to visibility. A significant blind spot means that neck-craning is an absolute must when orchestrating a lane change. Another more minor shortcoming concerns the wagon's adjustable cupholders, which are flimsy and difficult to maneuver.
